On March 7 and 8, 2015, the city of Sorocaba became the stage for a powerful celebration of art, music and female leadership: the 2nd Independent Exhibition of Art and Music by Women of Sorocaba – Sharing Knowledge and Promoting Sound. Held in celebration of International Women’s Day, the event reaffirmed its role as an important platform for visibility, exchange and the empowerment of local women’s artistic production.

Supported by LINC Sorocaba, the project not only expanded the reach of independent cultural initiatives in the city but also contributed to the institutional recognition of local culture. The event was produced by Gávea Cultural, whose work was instrumental to the success of the exhibition and whose involvement in the project subsequently led to the company receiving the Selo Social certification.

The second edition built on the success of its debut, held in 2012 at Chalé Francês, under the organisation and curatorship of sociologist Flavia Biggs. As with the first edition, the programme brought together artists from a wide range of disciplines — including photographers, visual artists, musicians and women-led bands from Sorocaba or based in the city — highlighting the diversity and creative strength of the local cultural scene.

Going beyond artistic performances, the exhibition also stood out for its programme of free educational and creative workshops, promoting access to knowledge and encouraging participants’ creative autonomy. Activities explored topics such as the menstrual lunar calendar, life drawing, guitar for women, the use of herbs, and image and identity. Designed for a female audience from adolescence onwards, the workshops offered a limited number of free places.

The musical programme took place throughout both evenings, featuring between two and four groups per night. The performances created an atmosphere of celebration, connection and exchange, providing a stage for diverse musical expressions led by women.

With the aim of fostering dialogue and sharing experiences among women — both artists and members of the wider community — the 2nd Exhibition reinforced the importance of creating inclusive and collaborative spaces. By promoting art and music created by women in Sorocaba, the event contributed to broadening the city’s cultural landscape while encouraging new, more diverse and representative narratives.

The initiative remains a significant milestone in Sorocaba’s cultural scene, demonstrating the power of collective action and the transformative potential of art when driven by a strong social purpose.
