Hai Kai Canadian Tour 2012

The performance revisits the idea that poetry is where everything begins. It reveals how poetic art can — and should — move in step with music, since music itself emerged from poetry.

The project seeks to challenge the misconception that modern, alternative and rebellious artistic expressions cannot embrace the beauty of words or the poetic form of haiku simply because it does not conform to mainstream tastes. Ultimately, the project aims to bring haiku to a wider audience as a form of poetry that can live naturally within rock music.

In 2010, the group dedicated itself to the meticulous realisation of a project in the city of Sorocaba, approved by LINC, the city’s cultural incentive programme. The initiative brought the group’s show, Hai Kai: Poetry in the Form of Rock, to public schools and educational institutions, with performances preceded by talks on haiku poetry offered to both students and teachers.

In 2011, under the artistic direction of Leda Villela, the performance became more interactive and multimedia-driven. The project was selected by ProAC, the São Paulo State cultural incentive programme, for performances in Votorantim, Pardinho and Salto. The show also toured SESC and SESI venues, as well as municipal events, bars and theatres across cities in the interior of São Paulo and in the capital.

In October 2012, the performance crossed international borders, travelling to Nova Scotia, Canada, for a month-long tour featuring more than 20 performances across the province, as well as over 30 workshops led by members of the group.

The international tour was supported by Brazil’s Ministry of Culture through its Cultural Exchange and Dissemination programme. Its purpose was to bring Brazilian musical and literary culture to international audiences, creating a dialogue between Brazilian artistic expression and the wider world.
