Hai Kai: Poetry in the Form of Rock

The performance revisits the idea that poetry is where everything begins. It reveals how poetry can — and should — move in step with music, since music itself emerged from poetry.

The project seeks to challenge the misconception that modern, alternative and rebellious artistic expressions cannot embrace the beauty of words or the poetic form of haiku simply because it does not conform to mainstream culture. Ultimately, the project aims to bring haiku to a wider audience as a form of poetry that can naturally find its place within rock music.

In 2010, the group undertook the production of a project in the city of Sorocaba, approved by LINC (the municipal cultural incentive programme). The initiative brought the show Hai Kai: Poetry in the Form of Rock to public educational institutions, with each performance preceded by a talk on haiku poetry for both students and teachers.

In 2011, under the artistic direction of Leda Villela, the performance became more interactive and incorporated multimedia elements. The project was selected by ProAC (São Paulo State’s cultural incentive programme) for performances in Votorantim, Pardinho and Salto, and subsequently toured SESC and SESI venues, municipal events, bars and theatres throughout the interior of São Paulo and the capital.
